Hawaii is among the world’s top destinations for modern art.  Local and foreign artist are using their creations to make the island more fun to visit.  Cristiano Cairati a European collector says “There’s more energy and there are endless possibilities that New York had in the late 80’s and 90’s when you could be and do anything.”  Many artists in Honolulu are using art events called “POW WOW Hawaii” to showcase their creations and they are hoping that the art will attract attention and impress viewers.  Each year, for a week in February, artist from around the world cover a warehouse with murals in Kakaako.  What began in Honolulu, is now expanded to include additional locations in Taiwan, Jamaica, New Zealand, Singapore and Washington, D.C.  Project organizers see this expansion as spreading traditional Hawaiian art around the world.  The new wave of artists who are exhibiting in Hawaii often see their work as reflections of natural resources or traditional crafts.  For more information on  art events in Hawaii, see everfest.com.

There’s an interesting art installation on London Bridges.  The extravagant light display is drawing tourist to the bridges and banks of the Thames.  In November 2016 the bridges are lighting up, tracing a loose “S” shape across 17 bridges along the river through central London.  Visitors find the lights dramatic, beautiful, and energetic at the flick of a switch.  Hannah Rothschild created the light show to make the city and Thames a place to enjoy after dark.  The lights are atop the bridges, shooting downward and reflecting off the water.  The lights are timed to reflect the geographical location of each bridge and the rotation of the earth.  The money for the light is coming from private and philanthropic sources, and is costing nearly 25 million dollars. This lighting is a major piece of public art.
